Thanks for the link to the blacklist. A question, though (real, not rhetorical): Does Akismet use a list such as this as one of its criteria for deciding what is spam or not?

No, it does not. It uses a complex mechanism to filter out spam comments. Blacklists are just one layer of protection

Hello Oscar Not-a-Grouch!
True, Akismet is excellent, but I really appreciate WordPress’s section allowing me to enter frequent offender words that might slip through the spamcatcher. Is the posted list current? I’m not sure if there’s any need for an update, as the comment header was quite recent, Dec 2009, if I recall correctly…
Also, I’d be happy to share my own list of bad words. Mine are a subset of yours, but I have approx 10 others you might want to consider adding. Let me know and I’ll email with a *.txt format file attached.

Ellie, yes, please send it over, you can e-mail it to:

I’ll add them to the list and note it in there. This is pretty current, its a few months old but I’ll give it a revision after you send me some new ones. Thank you!
Hi Oscar, I linked to this post in one of my posts, and I added the words to my Comment Blacklist to work in conjunction with Akismet.
Thanks for the great resource,
Tim

Hi Tim, Thanks a lot for the link back. I tried to look at the image on your post so I could include the words you added but I can’t see the image for some reason, it always shows very small. Do you want to e-mail me the words you had and I’ll add them to the list and give you a plug in there. I’ll hit you up on your site in a minute too in case you didn’t subscribe to this.
