Timehop, one of my favorite services as of lately reminded me that a year ago I posted about this video on Facebook. I thought it’s timely still and I like to share it with you this time here, on my blog.

The video is about realizing how short each moment is. How we have our bucket list of things to do, and we postpone them because, today we’re tired. Because the premiere of The Apprentice is coming up.

This guy, Ric Elias describes his experience while his flight crashed. A lot of realizations can happen in a moment. Some of us won’t get that wake up call so that we can re-align our priorities. In an instant everything can be changed.

He leaves us with a task, to imagine yourself in this same situation he just described. And he asks: “how would you change?” if you had this gift, the miracle of a second chance. What would you get done that you are waiting to get done because you think you’re going to be here for ever?

Google Offers has been rumored for sometime now, but it has just been announced. Google Offers works in conjunction with Goolge places and allows business owners to offer deals or specials. The intro video implies a lot of flexibility. If you didn’t believe you needed to be in the geolocation directories like foursquare and yelp, now perhaps you’ll reconsider. When Google releases a new product, it is likely that you want to be part of it. You need to be in these three places. Yelp, Foursquare and now Google Places.

Yelp has Check-in Offers, Foursquare has Specials and now we have Google Offers. I like competition and I like options and choices. I have a feeling that this will put a fire under foursquare to improve and innovate once again. I’m a little bored with foursquare actually.

Get your business in all three networks, take ownership of your venues and use the features available for free to offer incentives for existing customers and new customers. It’s a free resource! Why wouldn’t you use them?

They even take a stab at Groupon’s model by saying in the intro video “you don’t even have to buy the offer in advance” you just get it when you are in that location.
No topics for this post.

I found Night Train (2009) because I had run out of things to watch on Netflix. This turned out to be an interesting flick. Danny Glover is one of the main characters along with Steve Zahn, and Leelee Sobieski (both from Joy Ride). With three main characters played by actors I like, I thought I’d give this film a try.

Turns out Night Train is a low budget thriller. You can see several scenes where the train is animated as it cruises through the snowy countryside. But that doesn’t take away from the storyline or the big twist.

Pete (Zahn), plays a less than average drunk salesperson while Chloe (Leelee) is a dedicated straight-arrow student on her way home. Conductor of the Train, Miles, played by Danny Glover and the two other characters find themselves in a dilemma when a fourth passenger in the train dies.

The passenger that dies was carrying a box and this box happens to have very valuable items in it. After setting up the plot and story line for the rest of the movie, we embark in the journey to find out what’s in the box, and why each of the three characters wants the box. The conductor, the student and the salesman decide they will keep the box with the jewels and somehow get rid of the body, and walk out unscathed with a fortune.

As with most thrillers, the movie doesn’t quite pan out that way. I don’t want to spoil it because I found this to be a little diamond in the rough. It’s low budget for sure, but the acting is decent and the story line isn’t half bad. At the end, I think the twist will make this short movie worthwhile.

Overall I would rate this at a 3.5 – 4. I like how the film turned out with a dreamy feeling. It remnids me of that video podcast Tiki Bar on iTunes. The movie had this dreamy feeling, and frankly the story seems to come from a fantasy. Something that you’d dream up while waiting, while bored, maybe as you ride in a long train ride.

By the way, Tiki Bar stopped producing a long time ago but you can still watch their episodes from iTunes. They have great video podcasts and great drink recipes

Other Tidbits:
There’s another Night Train movie from 2002 with a totally different subject matter.

I found it interesting that the lady in the train actually looked like a man. Turns out it was a man and for some reason actor Richard O’Brien plays Mrs. Froy.

Definitely engaging. Yea some weak plot points but this was one of the better train movies I’ve seen. lee lee was hott. The Japanese guys were hilarious. The dog was cute. Steve Zahn is always awesome. & Danny Glover plays the moral man with reservations perfectly. egoangel18

A fast-paced mysterious film set on a passenger train speeding through the snow with three main characters and one small wooden box. Danny Glover is the devoted conductor; Steve Zahn is a booze-nipping traveling salesman and Leelee Sobieski is a quiet introverted med student heading home for the holidays.

It’s worth watching in an evening by yourself with nothing better to do.

I came across an article about RIMs desperate efforts to get people interested in their new phone. This time is the Blackberry 10. But you won’t see it this year. As I’ve said before, I was a hardcore Blackberry fan until the iPhone 3GS. And I hate to see companies fail but sometimes it is by their own actions that they get chopped.

RIM is close to its end. Something miraculous needs to happen in that company or else they’ll be scooped up by an investment firm, or another manufacturer that will simply piece out their IP and make Blackberry nothing more than a memory. RIMM (NYSE) was trading at 144 in June 2008, Today it is trading around 13 – 14. That sucks!

Developers get the “alpha”

The new Blackberry 10 is being handed out to developers to entice them to build apps. But even the developer’s model sucks…

While the remarkably unfinished state of the phones may add to RIM’s reputation for delivering products behind schedule and incomplete, Alec Saunders, the company’s vice president of developer relations, said it was necessary to get a “very, very stripped down” version out to developers now to avoid a more serious problem later.

What Alec Saunders doesn’t get is that developers don’t want a shitty platform. They want a good platform, long gone are the days of a buggy os

credit: shutterstock

and diy hardware like when Android started. That was new and exciting for developers, it was okay to have a few features missing here and there. That’s not the case now. People expect a solid foudnation in which to build their apps. So you see, I feel bad for my used-to-be favorite mobile device maker, but they’ve brought that upon themselves.

I am pretty sure Blackberry/RIM will continue to fade into the abyss of irrelevance in the next 12 – 18 months and eventually somebody is just going to scoop them up at cost and end their painful flailing.

In the aricle, Alec is quoted…

“The reason why we’re doing this — which is unprecedented for us and it’s quite uncommon in the industry — is because we want to create a wave of application support behind the new BlackBerrys before we bring them to market,” Mr. Saunders said in an interview on Friday at a RIM office here where much of the new operating system was developed. “If we launch without applications, well, it will be slow.”

Really dude? unprecedented…? Blackberry’s playbook might as well have been beta because it broke everytime I tried doing anything with it, it crashed at the slightest attempt to actually play around with it. And, well, you’re right if you launch without apps it will be slow… But if you launch a shitty product it will just be halted.

And that’s how you should always buy apple computers. Buy the least amount of RAM then upgrade with third party RAM. Cheaper and just as good. No sense in spending hundreds of dollars for something that costs a fraction… oh wait…

Definitely not the end of Dropbox or other cloud services as much as Gmail didn’t and hasn’t marked the end of Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and exchange. Extremely useful, incredibly valuable, but not easy for everyone to adopt as early as we do.

This happens to me a lot on Netflix, not just the news. I think it’s going to be a more prevalent problem in the future as more and more people move to online TV & shows.

Before I watched The Apprentice, the chatter was already going on in Twitter. That’s a bummer for the west coast people because people in Twitter give us spoilers. So I thought why not capture some of this. Then I watched the show.

Tony Starr * – @mrmistr
Aubrey said she was a mini trump, what a dumbass. id still hit that #theapprentice

Just like I thought before. Aubrey just needs a few slices of humble pie. Then she can rock the house. Until then she seems to keep saying some pretty provocative things.

If @aubreyoday would just tone it down a little and strategize more instead of just opening up her mouth all the time. She’d have a better time. I still root for her. Hoping she wins.

I just kinda like watching #theapprentice for some reason

I just kinda do too, @Thats_Jareeed.

I started watching it more because you can actually learn quite a bit. I know it’s edited and manipulated to make us feel certain way. But if you try to pay attention to what actually gets done in those short week challenges, that’s quite an accomplishment every week.

Hasn’t started on the West Coast yet.

I think that Arsenio is secretly in Love with Aubrey!

Do people not understand competition? It is all I. If u don’t show ur ability no one else will..No1 was on that show for friendship, come on!

This is well said. In the show, I think you’d be a fool to think anyone is your friend. There might be some amount of mutual respect and cooperation as the herd thins, but this ends quickly.

I’m surprised where the show is at right now. I think there have been some mistakes on who’s been fired and who’s still here but I’m still rooting for Aubrey.

I know right!? – Who from this season has left and you still have respect for? I think I might be able to say that Paul Sr. from Orange County Choppers. or even Dee Snider. But this is very often the case.

I thought this was just for once or twice that it happened, but Lisa lsot a lot of my respect after this season.

Another recap…

All in all, I ended up watching the espisode late, after West Coast time, but I like how it ended. I’m glad that Aubrey won… But seriously she need to strategize a little more. She makes herself too vulnerable and relies too much on her power. A little more finesse and she’ll be a true rockstar.

Meetup – The Best Social Network?

I've heard this now a few times. Meetup.com Is that the network is the best real "social" network. I see it as connecting real life interests with virtual communities and truly bridging the geographical gaps.

When you realize that there are other people interested in the same things as you are, and you can likely find a group of them meeting on a regular basis, within 10 or 15 miles from your location, that's cool. This has never happened before at this scale. These people are meeting, quickly online and then in real life. And trust me! they're not just tweeting about it, they're not just blogging about it.

Take for example even SMMOC is fueled by meetup.com. Meetup.com is quietly growing and will be shaking things up quite a bit. Connecting people in real life, that's where it all comes down to.

That's powerful. That's a strong network. And my thoughts on #Foursquare is that #Fsq is cool but in comparing the two, Meetup.com vs Foursquare?

They're very different so I wouldn't compare them much. Meetup.com joins you with like-minded individuals in a comfortable group setting. Foursquare in the other hand tells you which places are the happening spots around your current location.

Cheryl Hawley – @CherylAHawley
To find events in your area do you favor @foursquare or @meetup? #smmoc

I thought this was a great topic of discussion. Regarding a choice between the two, well they’re really both two different things. Meetup is really good at bridging the digital knowledge and virtual relationshiphs into real in life meetings.

I’ve met some really great people at different meetups. But like @24x7media said, the people attending all have a common interest.

Foursquare in the other hand is good at telling you what type of places might be good to visit because they are trendy. Or at least trendy within social media circles, scratch that… at least within those that play Foursquare. In the grand scheme of things Foursquare isn’t that big. But it’s getting there…

See!? Everybody does it, so you might as well do it and next time you have to miss #SMMOC just lurk. Use the hashtag (as covered in today’s meetup) to follow what people are talking. You can choose to participate or just watch.

Not the smooth operator kind, but the Advanced Search Operators. As mentioned in the meeting today, these are called Boolean. You can find more info about Boolean searching with this basic intro to boolean searching on the internet page http://www.internettutorials.net/boolean.asp .

The basics boolean searching is that you can pick a search that has multiple parameters, perhaps joining two different sets of data, or excluding a section of the data by using a filter and excluding certain terms.

I like my android, and most of the Android Apps out there. But I thought that there is one missing Android app for our smart phones. We need a Chrome / Android app. Similar to the one that lets you send websites from your chrome browser to your mobile phone. Except the need is to make it go the other way.

Use cases:
* Scan QR code and send info to your Chrome browser.
* As you are reading an article, you walk into your office and want to finish it on your desktop.

Ideally, you could choose different “profiles” or users to send it to, but directly to the browser. So if you need to send a website to someone, you could just send it directly to their Chrome browsing session.

Wouldn’t that be cool and useful?

I guess a rudimentary way of doing this right now is with a web service, like readitlater or evernote or something like that. The only problem with that is the couple of additional steps of sending it to the service. Then typing in some description for it, and then retrieving the website when you get to the desktop.

Another way would be to have your browsers synchronized and save the article to a temporary bookmarks folder.

I guess I’ll have to try this and see how it works.
