In my search of who really is Oscar Gonzalez, I’ve found many. In fact you know that I’m the Oscar Gonzalez you are looking for, but I find it fascinating that the name is so popular. I always assumed that it was a bit of an odd combination. Oscar, comes from Eastern Europe I believe, and Gonzalez of course has its roots in Spain. The variations are many, but it seems that Gonzalez is the “proper” way to spell it, compared to Gonzales, or Gonsales, or even Gonsalez.
This particular instance of the name caught my eye because this boxer named Oscar Gonzalez, nicknamed “Gost” (fantasma), is actually fighting in Tepic, Nayarit. That’s where my grandfather was born so it caught my eye immediately. In any case, this fighter actually has a good record. Check it out!
Motivated and ready to return home to Tepic, Mexico, on Saturday, May 19th, super bantamweight Oscar “Fantasma” Gonzalez (27-1, 24KOs) is in Tijuana, Mexico, preparing with his trainer Fernando Fernandez for his next challenge in the form of the experienced Giovanni “Ruso” Caro (23-10-4, 18KOs). The twelve round bout will be for Gonzalez’s WBC USNBC 122lbs. title and will be broadcast live in Mexico by Televisa’s “Sabados de Corona” boxing
