Recently I watched No Escape. An action thriller with Luke Wilson & Pierce Brosnan.

TL;DR. It's great, jam packed with adrenaline pumping scenes and some truly frightening situations.

For a full review & more, see the full post.

Here's my movie review and commentary about No Escape, 2015 with Luke Wilson, Pierce Brosnan and Lake Bell.

First the trailer if you haven't seen it yet. It's actually a great trailer. Just enough to get you hooked and give you a sense of the story but not too revealing.

This was a really intense movie. I would give it a high 6/10 or maybe 7/10 rating. The acting is fine, I even like Wilson in this.

But there is no comedy here. This is a serious, adrenaline pumping thriller. There were at least a few scenes that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Pierce does a great job too as a political corporate mercenary role that saves the day a few times before he meets his demise

You see one of the scenes in the trailer for a moment. Yes, tossing the little girl in the air. Wait until you see the full thing. #OMG

It's not necessarily a masterpiece, but it's better than a textbook thriller. The storyline is plausible and the intense action makes up for some of the plot holes. It is violent and gory but I think only as much as it needs to be.

Would I recommend you watch it? Sure. If you like action, escapes, shooting, political turmoil and don't mind some intense violence and civil war-like situations then yes, you must watch this. Is it going to win an Oscar? probably not but it will probably be on Netflix within 6 months.

I knew Scientology was questionable. Like all other religions, it is based on vague theories and stories and the amazing leadership of one or a few people that convince the followers to do as they command.

But Scientology takes it a step further. It's a cult, wrapped with a corporation blanket and granted the status of "religion," it makes more money than some countries but it has tax-exempt status granted by the IRS.

Yes, it's truly awful.

This is the view and message of this expose, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief. Which I highly recommend you watch. It's made by HBO so the production quality is of the highest class.

The documentary was released recently and it features several people that were key members of the organization.

They spill their guts on camera and have some astonishing things to reveal. This so called religion is so creepy, that I felt like I was watching a documentary about a cult.

It reminded me of things I've watched before, like Jonestown by Jim Jones. Or like the Heaven's Gate crazies, except these guys have actually gone beyond the small time cult status into a global organization.

They are and have been accused of some serious crimes in the news and this documentary reinforces those positions. From murder to kidnapping, extortion and harassment. The people interviewed in the documentary tell it all and It will make your jaw drop.

Here's the trailer:

Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief is an HBO documentary and you can get it on demand from HBO, or just watch it when it airs if you have a subscription to the HBO service.

I promise you'll be left in awe after watching it. You thought that the LDS church had a murky beginning? Well, wait until you find out how Scientology got started.

I found another movie that I skipped the first time around, I'm talking about Prisoners with Jake Gyllenhaal and Hugh Jackman. This movie was directed by Denis Villeneuve who also directed Enemy also with Gyllenhaal. You can get it on Netflix DVD, Google Play, or on Amazon Prime.

This is a must watch mystery thriller. It is dark and full of twists. This is the synopsis:

Keller Dover (Hugh Jackman) faces a parent's worst nightmare when his 6-year-old daughter, Anna, and her friend go missing. The only lead is an old motorhome that had been parked on their street. The head of the investigation, Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal), arrests the driver (Paul Dano), but a lack of evidence forces Loki to release his only suspect. Dover, knowing that his daughter's life is at stake, decides that he has no choice but to take matters into his own hands.

I won't spoil it for you because that would suck, but I can tell you that this movie is worth watching. Gyllenhaal plays a cop that is sedulous and efficient at his job until he hits this case where nothing makes any sense and the clues are misleading.

Every lead seems to be a dead end.

Jake is the twitchy small town cop trying to find the perpetrator.

Maria Bello & Hugh Jackman as parents, fighting to keep their sanity.

Jackman plays the dad who will go to whatever extremes necessary to find his missing daughter, even if it means crossing the lines of morality, or decency and dragging the other dad (Terrence Howard) along with him.

Check out the trailer and then go to your favorite service to get this movie and watch it. I have to warn you, it's not for the faint of heart. But if you like murder mysteries, cop thrillers and then you won't be disappointed. And as always Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a stellar performance, and you can't complain about the rest of the cast who does a terrific job as well.

Well, I must say that it was a great movie to play in the background while doing something else completely. I like to have some background noise sometimes when I'm blogging or doing maintenance on my blogs. For that, this was perfect.

It is rare that I agree with rottentomatoes about a movie, but in this case they are spot on with their 6% rating. Despite having two big names, Ford and Oldman, the movie is mostly a farce. The storyline is somewhat entertaining, but the execution is poor.

It's a classic case of a potentially good premise, but poor execution of the script and lack of understanding of technology. It tries to meddle with high tech stuff and social media but it falls flat on its face.

There are a couple of high paced scenes, but besides that this is one of those that should have gone straight to DVD. In fact I think it did because I don't remember hearing about this at all. The only way I found out about this was because I was browsing for movies I might have missed in the past few years.

When I saw Oldmans and Ford's name I thought: I must have seen this already. And perhaps I did but my brain removed it from my memories in an attempt at preventing me from getting mad at myself for wasting almost two hours. This is supposed to be a corporate tech thriller but it lacks the tech and the thrill.

There, In just 2 minutes I saved you almost two hours. Skip this one.

You bet your ass it sucks!

So I rated this movie pretty much as shit... But how do you rate this post?

Last Knights, starring Clive Owen, Morgan Freeman and a cast of other people you probably don't remember except maybe Cliff Curtis as a bad guy before was a great movie. I'm probably not your average movie reviewer because I put aside all the other bullshit that critics tell you about the movies.

I read some reviews and looked at the ratings for this before I saw it. That is in fact why it took me a while to see it; the reviews and comments aren't that great. But I regret following the crowd. The pretentious reviews and commentary I read about the movie were dead wrong.

I won't spoilt it for you by giving away the plot, but suffice it to say that it had my undivided attention the whole time. I did figure out the plot and the storyline pretty early on. But this was part of what kept me glued to it; I had to see if I really had it all figured it out.

The movie is about honor and legacy. The acting is great and the tone is set by Freeman and carried by the rest of the cast. I could have used a little more action perhaps but overall, this deserves a high 7 in my book. IMDB gives it a 6.3, JoBlo gave it a 5 and I believe Rotten Tomatoes unfairly ranks it at 17%, especially when you look at something like Wild Card and see that movie getting a 28%. Makes me wonder if Rotten Tomatoes is still relevant at all.

Should you watch it? Heck yeah, I was entertained and intrigued. I liked the whole thing and understood the story, the message and the plot perfectly. I could have used a little more action and for some reason there just wasn't enough blood despite its very violent unroll. I liked it and I think you will too, I can tell why the critics didn't. But at the end of the day, if it entertains you, who cares what the critics say right?

I'm a big fan of sci fi. I'm also a big fan of horror. What do you get when you put both of them together?

You get Dark Skies. You'll find water melon eating aliens coming to get you in this thriller. There, I said it but that's not a spoiler since that's all over the descriptions for the movie on Netflix and online. Besides, there's a lot to the story and to my surprise this is a fairly new story.

You'll see a copule of familiar faces perhaps. J.K. Simmons, Josh Hamilton and Keri Russell are some familiar faces. But even the gorgeous Keri won't distract you from the suspenseful storyline.

You'll find it on Netflix, here's the trailer.

I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10.

But what happens when Denzel is a mild mannered Home Mart worker? You know mayhem is going to go down. You know that job is just a cover up for something. Denzel doesn't work at the Home mart for no reason!

This felt part Man on Fire, part Taken, but 100% awesome. Chloe Grace Moretz plays a young Russian teenager fallen prey to the Russian mob. You can get an idea of where it goes next right? Young, beautiful, damsel in distress... I wonder what's going to happen next?

A must watch for thriller and action fans. Denzel and his counterpart played by Marton Csokas go to battle over a 30 second scene.

Not for the faint of heart, pretty intense violence so be warned about that. Definitely R or higher but will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Scarlet Johansen as a kick-ass super-powered gorgeousness embodied, her name is the only reason you need to see this movie. But it still looks like it will be a big hit amongst sci-fi and action movie fans.

Equalizer

My man Denzel Washington stars in Equalizer and it looks pretty badass. A mix between Man on Fire and Training Day and classic Denzel kick-ass Washington. The rest of the cast is great and the soundtrack looks to be stellar.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Childhood classics time. This time is The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, this summer they're here to save the world one more time. This time with the gorgeous **** Fox, this looks like it will be a great movie to catch.

"They're Ninjas." I love when Fox says... they're ninjas to Whoopi. Made me laugh out loud.

Cantinflas

This made me teary-eyed just watching the trailer. It brought so many memories of being a kid and watching his movies with grandma and grandpa.

Most Americans have never heard of Cantinflas. So this is the story of one of Mexico's most famous and loved entertainers of all time. I can't wait to watch this and I'm glad that the trailer shows that they did a really good job on the production of this film. The guy cast to play Mario Moreno is perfect. Ahi esta el detalle!

The Signal

A very interesting sci-fi thriller. Seems a bit alien, a bit futuristic at first, but then you get some glimpses of some sort of apocalyptic psychological warfare type of thing. Maybe borderline horror. Laurence Fishburne the girl from Bates Motel star on this one. I'm not sure if I really really want to watch it as much as it has piqued my interest.

Here's my review of How It's Made, episode one. I've always liked this show, but I don't think I started watching it until it was in season 2 or 3. You can't ever get enough ideas and understanding of how stuff works so why not. The thing with the first episode was interesting.

If you are familiar with the show, How It's made usually has a factory or other manufacturing outlet and they show you who stuff is is made. Things like guitars, q-tips, or shoes. Sometimes electronics. But this episode was different. I found it on Netflix, so you can watch it there if you've got an account. If you don't, at least you can try it free for like a month and see what you're into.

They cover how Corn is made. But wait! corn isn't made right? it's a plant, it just grows. Yes, technically it grows and it isn't made. Plus We eat corn all the time, so why is this in the first episode? Well the fact is that we do "make" corn, we've engineered to be certain way in order to feed our world's growing population. Not just as a food, like corn in the cob. That is actually a very small part of the production of corn.

Corn is used to make all kinds of things. This episode of How it's made covers all aspects of corn production and they did a good job at presenting a really complete picture. The look and feel of this episode, being the first one of the show is much different than those in later seasons. But as far as content goes, it is just as good as any other one I've seen.

It's worth mentioning that watching this reminded me of a few food related documentaries I've seen lately. I'll be reviewing those soon. They've made me change many eating habits just in the past 2 months. For now, all I can say is that you gotta cut out products with High-fructose corn syrup.

One of the cool things you learn from this episode is that corn actually can be used to produce a type of "green plastic" or bio-plastic. It can be used in things like water bottles, plastic knives and forks, cups, and other similar plastics. And all of this comes from a tiny yellow kernel grown in our country. Crazy stuff.

They cover how it is engineered, planted, grown and broken down for different things. They can make plastics, food, even whiskey. They cover this other product you've most certainly seen in something you ate at some point or another. They talk about how xanthan gum is made, one of the most important products made from corn. We use xantham gum in almost any type of industry. We even eat it. You can find it in lots of products you consume or eat. Seriously. Look it up!

After they cover "dead corn" then they go into more edible varieties, like pop-corn and other types. Must watch. Hopefully this sparks a sense of wonder and you get into learning more about your world!

[box type="alert"]If you're into knowing how stuff works and how your world works all around you, then you should watch this. If you're not into that stuff then now is as good a time as ever to stop watching Housewives of Orange County and following drama in Facebook and start with this. It's on Netflix! And if you don't have Netflix, you can try it free for 30 days just visit the link.[/box]

All in all, I thought this was one of the good documentaries in Netflix. As I am learning everything I can about money, this movie naturally made it into my queue. Finally got to watch it - You can see my live comments as I watched the movie below where it says "live blogging."

Much like Queen of Versailles does, this movie illustrates how easy it can be to be on top and just as easily tumble down to the bottom overnight. The documentary covers the life and rise of floor traders in Chicago. Before computers were around, these guys were the shiznit! They earned and lost millions of dollars in seconds. One day you're up, the next you're down.

The documentary itself is well made, with a decent production value. Sound quality is good and the story is well narrated. The casting was really great too, you get to see those people that are on top and were able to see the changes coming and either quit the "game" or adjusted, and you also get to see those that were too arrogant to accept that change was underway.

Nowadays most of the trading happens via the internet, there are no more floor traders. Well, maybe a few but they're going away fast. Most commodities and markets transact over the internet nowadays and so this will be the way all trading is done in the very near future.

If you're up for it, watch this documentary. It's good, it will show you to be humble even when you're winning or when you're up and to save for a rainy day. The changes that the computer industry and era brought to this industry were devastating to some people. Always be on the look-out for something that could eliminate your value. Keep hungry and learn more every time. With that, head over to netflix to watch it if you're into this kind of thing.

[box type="alert"]What!? You don't have Netflix? Check out their 30 day free trial. You can watch at least this documentary and a bunch of others for free then decide if you want to keep it. I love my netflix account. Don't know what I would do without it![/box]

If you don't, then you've been living under a rock for the past decade.

Now you get to meet Craigslist Joe. But first... I was first introduced to Craigslist by my friend Pascale in 2003 and I thought it was the silliest idea. A free forum to advertise whatever.

I thought it was weak because they only had a handful of cities. And it was free, who would ever use such a thing? and how could such a website exist and scale to be usable by the larger populace?

At the time, they had a section for Los Angeles and San Diego but not Orange County.

Turns out that Craigslist wasn't such a bad idea. They eventually added Orange County and now they have almost every major city and metropolitan area. If the past 17 years of growth aren't proof of Craigslist's amazing reach and power, then you now need to watch this documentary: Craigslist Joe.

Craigslist Joe is one of the coolest documentaries I've seen lately. You can <del>find it on Netflix</del>. This is no longer on Netflix (sorry!)

Craigslist Joe is the story of Joseph Garner, a young man that decides to take a strange journey. Joe Garner decides to leave everything he knows behind for 30 day and live off of craigslist completely for those 30 days.

Joe kicks off his journey with a farewell party with his friends and family. To make the experience totally legit, he gets a new cell phone, and leaves all credit cards and access to friends behind.

In his backpack, there is a toothbrush, and a few other basic items, his laptop and a portable hotspot.

I won't spoil the fun of the film, but let's just say that this guy will do in 30 days what you won't do in years. From feeding the homeless and needy at a shelter, to learning how to break dance.

The freedom of not having a job and putting all other responsibilities on hold lets Joe experience life as it comes. There are no expectations, no judgements, no failures.

[nggallery id=20 template=caption]

Surprisingly, he's able to go from California, all the way to New York and back. Throughout his journey, he finds food, company and shelter all through Craigslist and the generosity of its members.

Truly a remarkable story and a really well made documentary. Towards the end, he even gets to meet the founder of Craigslist, Craig Newmark. Pretty cool adventure in my book.

I bet that Joe learned more about himself in these 30 days than many of us will learn about ourselves a year. In the closing part of the movie, Joe is asked to describe his experience in 10 words or less.

He breaks down into tears as he tries to put into words what he has just experienced and at the end, the only thing he can say about the adventure is that it was inspiring. The most inspiring thing.

I am pretty picky about films, but this movie meets all three of my judging criteria (see #128). And turns out the executive producer is none other than Between Two Ferns funnyman Zach Galifianakis.

Unlike most low-budget documentaries on Netflix, Craigslist Joe has a great soundtrack and the audio is clean, sharp and even. Sometimes indie movies and documentaries have a crappy audio track which ruins the whole experience. That's not the case with this.

I would give this a two thumbs up and recommend you check it out. If you have seen it, what did you think about it?

I watch a lot of movies in Netflix. And by far the most entertaining genre for me are thrillers and horror movies. But as I think about technology and checking in to apps like Foursquare I start to imagine, how you could gamify crime solving and investigative work. Most thrillers, horror films and the like have a crime or case to be solved, so goes my train of thought...

How about an app to solve crime by mixing game elements with traditional detective work, and ultimately crowdsourcing crime-solving. Imagine the use of a foursquare-like law-enforcement app. It would have various levels of access, civilian or to NSA / FBI type of access, or not. Let's not complicate things, this is just an app for the right people that need it, m'Kay?

At its very basic, this app would alert a detective of a nearby clue or alert about any open cases pertinent to a situation. It may be his or her case but it doesn't have to be. It simply needs to be open for investigation. The most common way to connect the officer or detective to the case would be via geo-location, but activity that crosses cases would / could also trigger a connection. For example maybe a crime is related to two stores in the same street, or a witness' testimony is input and his name also comes up for another open case.

Say Detective Joe is having a cup of joe at Mary's Diner on the corner of First and Lincoln; the radio is quiet. He can't break his cases, they're all tied up with a missing piece but he's close. He's a top guy in the department. Pulls out his phone to read his girlfriend's txt message. She needs to talk to him about the mortgage papers. A more important alert shows up on top of his smart-phone. 3 Open cases nearby, the mortgage papers can wait.

He clicks on the alert and finds that there are three cases within 5 miles. He's familiar with one of them, his best friend is the lead. The other two cases are listed as looking for leads and evidence. The case he's familiar with now has 3 new leads, three suspects are listed as bring in for questioning. He knows one of the suspects from another case and so he knows where to find him and brings him in. Another alert describes a vehicle that may be involved in the case; it asks for all units to be on the lookout and report to the lead detective on the case.

This is where the app gets really cool and useful. The detective could go on to read anything about the case that is known. People's names, addresses, testimionies, clues, tips, watch crime-scene footage, review photographic evidence, listen to interviews, etcetera. Perhaps that very same diner is owned by a key witness and Mr Joe detective would like to ask a few more questions. Maybe he sees something others missed.

This app would be geo-location based with a privilege & permissions system. Each level of permission would grant people the ability to see what they need to see and provide more input, perform further investigative or follow up work with or about the case.

This would be ideal for cold cases or cases where there may be a road-block. No urgency required, something that needs to get done but for some reason or another it hasn't. This idea would gamify the whole thing by giving all participants an incentive for progressing towards solving the case, perhaps a department recognition. Maybe a badge, both in real life and *in the app!*. Maybe even a reward if there is one for a given case. Everybody would be on the lookout for important information and follow up work while helping each other by putting more and more eyes in more cases.

One of the key elements in this would be to open up certain clues to the public at some point. We know that police often ask for the public's help in solving certain crimes. Why not share that information via the app so that civilians could help with cases as they do now, but all managed through the app. I bet you, if this is implemented well, it could reduce crime, and help complicated cases be solved quickly.

The app could work just as well for immediate response systems. In addition to the traditional communication systems for emergencies and urgent cases, this app would provide imagery, additional comments, immediate access to testimonies, interviews and other vital information to solving a case quickly. Historical information, local information about gangs for example, if the crime is gang related.

Much like the police alert system and the amber alert system, this system could send alerts to the app and immediately provide information about timely events like a kidnapping, major accident and similar immediate response type of situations. Operators back at home office would continue to update the case and provide notifications as the updates to the app.

This! is using technology quickly for developing police cases. Maybe I'm thinking too much CSI and Hollywood here, but the past few months, this has been a recurring idea in my head. These knuckleheads in the movies need a smart app that tells them all what each person knows. That would of course be bad for me in this case because I'd have no movie to watch, but in real life if cime solving is anything like the movies, even one bit, I bet you my idea would work.

In fact I know it would work, because I know of medical apps that are being developed to serve similar functions, instead of crime, translate that word to cases and instead of the streets of a city, translate location to the various operating rooms in an emergency room in a hospital. Imagine the complexity of managing that! Similar to police work if you think about it. Sometimes timeframes are even close!

The more and more I write about this the more I can't imagine this doesn't already exist, but I think it would just be cool to develop and make it the way I am thinking about it. Ok back to work, enough day dreaming.

* 48 hours is a reference to a show based on the idea that most crimes need to be solved before 48 hours pass because evidence is lost and perps get away afeter that. Generally after a case goes "luke warm" and eventually cold, the investigators need to attend to more pressing matters.

I found Night Train (2009) because I had run out of things to watch on Netflix. This turned out to be an interesting flick. Danny Glover is one of the main characters along with Steve Zahn, and Leelee Sobieski (both from Joy Ride). With three main characters played by actors I like, I thought I'd give this film a try.

Turns out Night Train is a low budget thriller. You can see several scenes where the train is animated as it cruises through the snowy countryside. But that doesn't take away from the storyline or the big twist.

Pete (Zahn), plays a less than average drunk salesperson while Chloe (Leelee) is a dedicated straight-arrow student on her way home. Conductor of the Train, Miles, played by Danny Glover and the two other characters find themselves in a dilemma when a fourth passenger in the train dies.

The passenger that dies was carrying a box and this box happens to have very valuable items in it. After setting up the plot and story line for the rest of the movie, we embark in the journey to find out what's in the box, and why each of the three characters wants the box. The conductor, the student and the salesman decide they will keep the box with the jewels and somehow get rid of the body, and walk out unscathed with a fortune.

As with most thrillers, the movie doesn't quite pan out that way. I don't want to spoil it because I found this to be a little diamond in the rough. It's low budget for sure, but the acting is decent and the story line isn't half bad. At the end, I think the twist will make this short movie worthwhile.

Overall I would rate this at a 3.5 - 4. I like how the film turned out with a dreamy feeling. It remnids me of that video podcast Tiki Bar on iTunes. The movie had this dreamy feeling, and frankly the story seems to come from a fantasy. Something that you'd dream up while waiting, while bored, maybe as you ride in a long train ride.

By the way, Tiki Bar stopped producing a long time ago but you can still watch their episodes from iTunes. They have great video podcasts and great drink recipes

Other Tidbits:
There's another Night Train movie from 2002 with a totally different subject matter.

I found it interesting that the lady in the train actually looked like a man. Turns out it was a man and for some reason actor Richard O'Brien plays Mrs. Froy.

Definitely engaging. Yea some weak plot points but this was one of the better train movies I've seen. lee lee was hott. The Japanese guys were hilarious. The dog was cute. Steve Zahn is always awesome. & Danny Glover plays the moral man with reservations perfectly. egoangel18

A fast-paced mysterious film set on a passenger train speeding through the snow with three main characters and one small wooden box. Danny Glover is the devoted conductor; Steve Zahn is a booze-nipping traveling salesman and Leelee Sobieski is a quiet introverted med student heading home for the holidays.

It's worth watching in an evening by yourself with nothing better to do.

Before I watched The Apprentice, the chatter was already going on in Twitter. That's a bummer for the west coast people because people in Twitter give us spoilers. So I thought why not capture some of this. Then I watched the show.

Tony Starr * - @mrmistr
Aubrey said she was a mini trump, what a dumbass. id still hit that #theapprentice

Just like I thought before. Aubrey just needs a few slices of humble pie. Then she can rock the house. Until then she seems to keep saying some pretty provocative things.

If @aubreyoday would just tone it down a little and strategize more instead of just opening up her mouth all the time. She'd have a better time. I still root for her. Hoping she wins.

No comment. @arsenioofficial seems to have a good handle on things.

Jared David - @Thats_Jareeed
I just kinda like watching #theapprentice for some reason

I just kinda do too, @Thats_Jareeed.

I started watching it more because you can actually learn quite a bit. I know it's edited and manipulated to make us feel certain way. But if you try to pay attention to what actually gets done in those short week challenges, that's quite an accomplishment every week.

Hasn't started on the West Coast yet.

Do people not understand competition? It is all I. If u don't show ur ability no one else will..No1 was on that show for friendship, come on!

This is well said. In the show, I think you'd be a fool to think anyone is your friend. There might be some amount of mutual respect and cooperation as the herd thins, but this ends quickly.

I'm surprised where the show is at right now. I think there have been some mistakes on who's been fired and who's still here but I'm still rooting for Aubrey.

RT @Gronith: lol its funny how much respect I lose for the celebs on #Apprentice by the end of the season

I know right!? - Who from this season has left and you still have respect for? I think I might be able to say that Paul Sr. from Orange County Choppers. or even Dee Snider. But this is very often the case.

I thought this was just for once or twice that it happened, but Lisa lsot a lot of my respect after this season.

Another recap...

All in all, I ended up watching the espisode late, after West Coast time, but I like how it ended. I'm glad that Aubrey won... But seriously she need to strategize a little more. She makes herself too vulnerable and relies too much on her power. A little more finesse and she'll be a true rockstar.

Also, here's Aubrey's Website.

Terrible movie. I'm pretty lenient when it comes to low-budget films, but this was just not good. I got suckered into watching it from its Netflix recommendations.

I thought it would be interesting because of its tech slant. But I was wrong. I can't really even tell you what the movie was about or give you a proper review.

If you like broken storylines, poor editing, incomprehensible side stories, and plot then this is the movie for you.

Here's the trailer for this gem.

I haven't been this excited about a TV show since Weeds, or Dexter came out. I know, I know, what a degenerate right? Always liking shows about drugs, murders and crime. But to be honest, these are some of the best shows.

Breaking Bad simply breaks the mold of a TV show during all first three seasons. I've yet to watch any episodes from season four because it isn't on Netflix. But I'll start watching it soon.

It's gritty, unexpected, real and one of those dramas that will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. Except for the episode with the episode with The Fly. WTH was that about?

In anycase, get it on netflix, on video, on demand or wherever you can but watch this. It's a must and I can't wait to start season four. I know I'm behind the curve but what can I say, got lots of work to do, and just got around to finishing season 1, 2 and 3 recently.

No wonder people are calling this the best show in television.

The cast isn't bad, but sometimes the storyline has major holes in it. I know it's a TV show and it's all made up, but can't writers make it a little more believable?

I think the jury is out on this show and whether it will make it past the first season. Time shall tell.

She ends up rescuing this little girl from the parents, as they are about to make a roast of her. Literally.

Turns out little Lilith, the rescued girl, isn't the innocent, sweet, little girl you think she is. I'd give this movie a 3.5-4 out of 5. Just because of the ocasional overused trippy scary effects... but then again, this was made in 2009 so it was "trendy" back then.

The story might actually surprise you towards the end, definitely worth watching.

Found this on Netflix. I heard so much about it. I figured it was time to watch it. After the first few minutes, I thought: What a Bad start! What kind of sniper leaves a casing behind!? The rest of the movie just got worse.

I mean I get the whole thing with this being one of Clint Eastwood's iconic movies. But it was disapointing for me.

After the famous "do you feel lucky, punk" quote, I was totally put off. I had heard so much about this movie. So many lines have been made out of this, so many bachelors have quoted this movie during one or another drunken stupors. I wonder... have they actually watched it? The actual quote was anti-climatic and disappointing.

I like Clint Eastwood's other movies, perhaps more modern and more of my time. Unforgiven comes to mind, In the Line of Fire is another. But this was a bummer for me, I had to skip it.

I couldn't watch it past that scene and so I skipped it. Perhaps I'll come back to it, but I don't see that in the foreseeable future. Unless you think I totally missed something.

Based on my post about Not having TV, I thought I'd put together a list of movies I have seen on Netflix or Hulu that you can watch too. Remember, Hulu is free, Netflix is a paid service, Netflix has thousands of movies, while Hulu's selection is more limited. Also, Netflix has more commercially successful movies while Hulu tends to have independent lower quality films. Here are some of the gems I've found in both networks.

Beyond The Gates of Splendor. Available in
Hulu and Netflix

The Sea Inside (El Mar Adentro). Slow at times, but its worth watching. The theme is euthanasia so watch the preview and read it before watching it. Available on Netflix. I've been told that this is a depressing movie and some people can't stomach it. I can understand that, but I also think that this is a must if you're at all interested in who we are, what we do and the overall status and development of the Human condition. I'd give it a two thumbs up both in execution and delivery.

The Botany of Desire. It's about 4 plants that have shaped how we do many things today. Sometimes we think we're in control, but perhaps it is the other way around. Available on Netflix.

The girl with the Dragon Tatoo. Part of a trilogy, this is a mystery thriller with no gimmicks or special effects. It is truly about the story and the plot will drag you in with it to discover the truth about the missing girl. A classic whodunit with some elements of hackerdom, sex and murder. I'd love to find the other two movies online somewhere but they don't seem to be available on Netflix yet.

I got a chance to watch Quarantine. Let me tell you, I felt tense even 2 hours after watching it. The movie is good as any horror movie, I can't imagine being being in a situation like that.

I thought the same thing about Cloverfield, but I was disappointed when I got to watch it. Fortunately I only paid $2.99, I downloaded it onto my ps3. Having the chance to pause it, turn it up or down and doing all this at the comfort of my couch was a bonus, but it didn't make up for the bad aspects of the movie. That camera shaking was ridiculous so I'm lucky I didn't pay the full theater price to watch it.

Quarantine in the other hand was worth watching on the big screen. The fright fest begins about 10 or 15 minutes into the movie. Once it starts, the suspense and thrills don't stop until the credits start rolling. The cast is good, and they play their roles well.

Sometimes I think I'm a bit of a freak about certain details at the movies, like the sounds not matching the scene, or simple bloopers. I'm also weird about could-that-truly-happen scenarios, I analyze them and try to imagine if they would be possible in the given situation. I'm happy to say that I didn't find either one of those problems with this movie, and maybe that means that they weren't there. Maybe it means that the movie was so engrossing that I didn't notice them; either way is a thumbs up for me.

When I bring up issues of Cloverfield vs Quarantine, I'm only doing it so because thematically they're similar. They're both about a terrible and frightening situation, apocalyptic to some degree and truly horrifying. They share the style of the movie, both movies are shot from the point of view of the cameraman as the events unfold. They both are supposed to have the feeling of a home movie, or a movie reel that hasn't yet made it to the cutting floor.

In the case of Cloverfield, the camera guy is an amateur, just "a guy at a party" that shoots the whole thing with a small consumer style camcorder. Quarantine in the other hand, is shot by a more professional cameraman and he's using what appears to be a professional camera. Unfortunately both movies use some of the cheap tricks I hate about these kind of movies. Dark scenes, out of focus shots and a ridiculous and unrealistic amount of camera shake. Enough with the shaky camera!

[singlepic=384,300,240,,center]

The cameras shake a lot, remember Blair Witch Project? I think they nailed it on the whole camera shaking technique. In general though, the overuse of the shaking is really frustrating, this is extremely notable in Cloverfield; some people report getting nausea after or during the movie. Quarantine is not as bad with the shaking, but they instead use a lot of dark scenes and out of focus shots. I understand that this is something that might really happen in a disaster, but I still think that its a cheap way to scare us and keep us guessing what's around the next corner; without ever really showing you of course. But seriously, we get it, the cameraman gets the crap scared out of him and he misses a shot, or shakes the camera uncontrollably as the beast runs past him. That's fine, and expected of course, but its really obvious and rather insulting to the audience if you do this each time something actually happens. Both movies' events unfold in a period of less than a day, and the camera guys are always around some sort of major action --duh... there wouldn't be a movie without these unlucky characters right? Fine, but wouldn't you think that in the period of 10+ hours they would get a steady shot at least a few times?

[singlepic=382,300,240,,center]

Anyway, that's enough about that rant, I really did like Quarantine and I recommend that you catch it while is in theaters. I would not have said this about Cloverfield, and definintely don't bother with Lakeview Terrace; I saw that a couple weeks ago, also not worth $10.00. If you do go see Quarantine, you might get a glimpse at a new movie starring Megan Fox; The Unborn I think its called, and that looks like it could scare the pants out of everyone. here's the trailer... doesn't the girl look a lot like Megan Fox? Her name is actually Odette Yustman and coincidentally she was in Cloverfield. Another really hot girl in The Unborn is Meagan Good.

[youtube 3za3rJW2ttE]

Here's the trailer to The Unborn in case you're curious.

I went out to see IronMan last night. It blew me away, you should definitely watch it in a theatre that offers good quality sound, DTS is awesome. The movie is well done, the story line is believable and you actually end up liking the whole story. I wish it would have been longer but oh well. I would even say that I like this movie better than Transformers. Of course the stories are way different, but they both have great fighting scenes and excellent animation. I can't wait for the next chapter of the Iron Man franchise. My buddy David tells me that the main actors had to agree to a 3 movie deal.

It is just enough to leave you wanting more. Oh yeah and when you go see it, you should stick around until after the credits.

I also found this story (below), which is the stuff us nerds care about. The article points out two facts; the suit is not that far fetched; but until we have a new way of harnessing the energy needed to power a device like that, the suit will remain the stuff of comic books. It is simply impossible (today) to have the required energy in a practical format that could be used for such applications.

Tony Starks amazing suit is a long way from realization, mostly due to practical energy constraints.

As a comic book fan and physics professor, I am looking forward to the big screen debut of Iron Man. This is due, in part, to the fact that instead of getting belted with gamma rays or being born a demon from hell, industrialist and scientist Tony Stark got his super powers by means of his engineering genius.

But just how realistic is Starks amazing suit?

Sadly, nearly all of the features of the Iron Man suit, with one important exception, are not likely to be realized anytime soon. Lets look at each of the suits major elements in turn.

Iron Mans Suit Defies Physics -- Mostly

Seriously, Transformers is one of the best action movies I've seen in a long time. If you're an 80's child I recommend it even more, you surely grew up with Transformers as part of your childhood.

The movie is packed with action from beginning to end and the story is pretty good too. In addition to all the awesome fighting scenes, the slick transformations for both the Autobots and Decepticons, the movie is full of comedy. Whenever there is character or plot development, you will be on the edge of your seat or cracking up. Sam, the main human character just has something that makes him hilarious. Without giving any of the movie away, I strongly recommend you go watch it.

I have to admit that the only thing I didn't like about the movie is the blatant attempt by Chevy, GMC, and other companies to make this movie a 2-hour advertisement. You'll see what I'm talking about when you go see it. I noticed this right away and I just kinda made a mental note and tried to put it aside to enjoy the film.

Oh yeah, and Megan Fox is freaking hot. That's the hot girl you see with Sam most of the movie. Hot hot hot.
