People ask me this question all the time. How do I do all that I do and also raise my kids? How can I be a WAHD (Work at Home Dad) and also raise the kids?

In a short video (below) I took a moment to answer this question which comes up regularly. It applies to moms as well, so technically it's good for WAHD and WAHMs.

When you read it or watch the video, you'll think it's obvious and simple, even trivial.

But I think this small aspect is critical if you want to succeed with a home or online business AND also raise kids without putting them on the care of strangers.

As a quick side note, I pass no judgment if you have to leave your kids with babysitter services, or even regular daycare.

I know, as a parent you gotta do what you have to do, but all things considered, I think it's always better if I am with my kids whenever they're not at school. Call me old-fashioned if you wish.

But if you think this is a simple and obvious tip, watch the video and also read the entire blog post. I think you may reconsider after you absorb everything.

Simple, yet powerful.

Also as a side note and quick disclaimer. Someone I know and admire runs her entire life from a regular, pen-and-paper calendar system and it works amazing for her.

So whatever works for you, that is what you should do, but as you'll see in the video and read below, I prefer a digital option.

The option is yours, simply be true to yourself and use what works best for you.

How Can You Do It? Tips for Time Management for SAHD & WAHD and SAHM & WAHM.

You can start simply with a good calendar app.

I recommend Google Calendar, but since we're talking about using it for business then use the G-suite version instead of just the free Gmail version. Here's a link to a free trial.

Update (2021-07-19) After numerous negative experiences with Mailchimp, I no longer recommend it. Yes, they're still one of the leading email marketing service providers, but the headaches and heartaches that come with it just completely removed it from the options I think you should consider.

This lets you use a professional email address when using your calendar.

Using a professional email address when you invite customers or leads to an appointment will look more professional than if you use a free Gmail account.

This is not organized!

Also, you can use the free trial link, but after the trial, you'll need to pay for the service. When you pay for a service like this, it helps you to commit and solidify it as a critical part of your infrastructure and thus helps you do everything better.

It's a psychological hack. It should help you think that you have to use it, since you're paying for it. And this helps create a full loop.

Use the calendar to do better, do better and make more money because of your calendar, rinse and repeat.

A Few Other Tips

In addition to the main calendar where I keep my appointments and commitments to my family, I use a few other tools worth mentioning.

Mobile notifications

My mobile device alerts and notifications are critical. Make sure your phone alerts you of upcoming appointments ahead of time.

To make sure this works and nothing falls through the cracks, I set my calendar to remind me of upcoming appointments using the free Zedge notification app to customize the sound.

You're going to laugh at me, but I literally have the "Trollolololol song" as my calendar appointment reminder notification sound. Keeping things interesting and fun right? -- Not the whole thing, just like an 8-second clip, you'll find it on Zedge. ?

Using the new notifications control panel for my Android device lets me get really granular with notifications so I get notified by sound and don't even have to look at my screen sometimes to know what's coming up.

I set up multiple notifications for every appointment, by default with the following list of notifications are set:

1 day in advance

4 hours in advance

30 minutes in advance

5 minutes in advance

I adjust these four different notifications on a case by case basis for each event that makes it into the calendar.

For example, sometimes I may need more than 1-day notice for an event, and other times I don't need to be reminded more than once.

An organized life has a calendar to keep everything in order.

Remove Myself From the Equation

Sometimes managing the calendar in and of itself is a chore, I try to automate as much of that as possible. I have a system configured to minimize my time spent managing the calendar.

For client appointments, I use Calendly.

This way if I'm working with a lead, I send them a special link where they can book an appointment with me.

For most people, the free version of Calendly works just fine. Connect it to your Google calendar, set your rules of availability and you're ready to roll!

The Calendly system is based on settings I set in advance and also on my current availability. This prevents the usual back and forth series of emails trying to find a time that is convenient for both parties; they just find an open slot that works for them and automatically pencil themselves into my calendar.

I get notified and the appointment system will then remind me of the appointment as needed using the four notifications I mentioned earlier.

For Family Events Use the Shared Calendar Feature

In order to coordinate with family members, we all have our private calendars but we share availability with each other.

You can also do this within the settings of your calendar, or you can create a shared calendar for everyone that needs to participate.

We know what times are available, which times we're together for an event, and we can easily invite each other for future events.

For Social Events I Automatically Add Them to My Calendar

If you like to attend a lot of different events and have to deal with different websites to see your agendas, it is very useful to get all of those calendars to work in your Google calendar.

Meetup.com, Facebook events, EventBrite, and other types of calendars can automatically show up in your google calendar. Take a moment to search for instructions for your particular need and you'll find ways to get those appointments to show up in your own Google calendar.

I have this for my active Meetup.com events, and Facebook events. This way when I commit to an event in Facebook, or Meetup.com it automatically gets added to my calendar so I don't double-book myself with personal or professional activities.

If for some reason, you can't find instructions to connect a specific calendar to your Google calendar, you can try an app like IFTTT or Zapier to help you integrate new appointments with your calendar.

In Conclusion

This is a short video where I talk about how to run a business from home and raise kids at the same time.

I recommend getting a good calendar that works with you and for you. The last thing you want is to add more work to your daily life so take advantage of the technologies available.

This is just one aspect of managing the entrepreneur lifestyle while raising kids, but it's a big part of staying productive and maximizing efficiency.

Keep Your Eye on The Prize

Keep an eye on your desired outcome. For example for me it's imagining something like the scene below. Total relaxation, everything at peace. With a calendar in order, this is one step closer to reality than a distant dream.

Wouldn't it be nice to take a nap in there? Worry free? While you make money!?

In a future blog post and video, I'll cover other aspects talking about other productivity tips, including more automation, task management, time tracking and keeping a log of activity.

I think Sean Cannell said this was the best vlogging camera for 2018. I decided to get it a few months ago and I like it, but this video is about why I have the Canon EOS 800D aka Rebel 7Ti.

You may be wondering, a year later after Sean dropped that video. Should I get it if I want to vlog with it?

Watch the video to hear what I think about it and how I got my hands on one of these for about $100 less than regular retail price.

The company I got it from is eGlobal Central. Some people have had less than stellar experiences with them, but my experience was flawless and my friend’s also.

A couple of friends have spent over $ 4,000 with them in various electronics and gadgets without a problem. But the general recommendation is to use Paypal or a good credit card so you have buyers’ protection just in case something goes wrong.

My camera took about 12 days to arrive. I expected that it would take two weeks so 12 days was just about right.

If you are skeptical of using eGlobal Central, I understand and I don't blame you. I have found this same camera in Amazon for a little cheaper than retail, check it out here for the latest price.

Bruxie has been around for a long time now in Orange County. They started as a small shop in Orange, but since have opened a few other locations including one minutes away from me.

I took the kids after school one day to see what was up with them since I hadn't been there in a year, maybe two.

This is what happened during this new #foodieadventure.

There's a reason I haven't been to Bruxie in a while. Or rather, several reasons, only one of those reasons has changed now.

A few years ago Bruxie started to change. I'm not sure if they went through some growing pains, but the quality of the food went down, prices went up and the part that made Bruxie awesome kinda lost its appeal.

I can't quite pinpoint what appeal I'm referring to, but it was gone.

This time around, the food was amazing. I ordered the B.A.M.F. and got the kids some chicken tenders with Bruxie's waffle fries. Check out how everything turned out in the video.

<iframe title="Revisiting Bruxie. Is it Worth It? Is it Better?

The thing that changed was the quality of the food. I only have tried the B.A.M.F. and what they were serving at Taste of Huntington Beach the other day.

But I can say that the taste and quality are back, that's undisputable. The price, still a problem. Maybe it's just part of growing up, but $30 for 1 "grown-up" meal and one "side order" seems steep.

I had a chance to catch up with Adam Preiser from WPCrafter and Cartflows during the last WordCamp Orange County.

Instead of drilling him about WordPress stuff, I decided to interview him and ask him about the explosive growth on his channel.

Adam grew his channel from 60,000 subscribers and then pretty much doubled his subscriber numbers in one year.

Almost... his channel is sitting just below 120,000 subscribers as I write this.

Adam runs WPCrafter, a channel about WordPress for non-techies. You can also find more about it on the website.

Watch the interview to catch some tips, and just some tech talk about running a channel, growing it, avoiding rookie mistakes and more.

Adam is also the creator of CartFlows which I'll be reviewing soon I hope. Think of CartFlows as ClickFunnels for WordPress.

Something odd about this interview. See at the bottom of this post, you should see a list of all the equipment I have.

It's not fancy or sophisticated equipment, but there are a few pieces. I try to use it all when it's necessary.

It was necessary during this interview because there were people everywhere so the background noise would be high.

I was prepared I thought. I brought my Zoom recorders, a splitter, two microphones and I set everything up. Adam was wired, I was wired, everything was going according to plan.

Then a few minutes later after we finished the interview I realized that the recorder hadn't been recording the whole time! My heart sank. I thought I had wasted that entire interview.

Luckily the camera microphone worked pretty well and only picked up minor interruptions.

It's not perfect but it still captured us really clearly most of the time.

What do you think? Also, what do you think of the interview? What other questions would you like to ask Adam? Or what did you learn from this?

Although Taste of Huntington Beach is mostly about food and wine, there are always a few shops that aren't about eating or drinking at all. Such is the case with Surf City Flags, a local Huntington Beach business run by Brett Siciliano. Brett specializes in custom flags and they are super cool.

This is a short video I made of Surf City Flags, when I went to the last Taste of Huntington Beach event. Surf City Flags make custom flags out of wood and some have a secret compartment to store valuables.

The flags with the secret compartments are called "concealment" flags. You can see them all on their website.

And in case you ever thought "hmmm, I wonder how I can get my hands on a 7 ft wooden flag..." Well, here's how:

Youtube is a huge site, with millions of videos uploaded daily, it ranks as one of the top 5 websites in the world, and it's widely referred to as the 2nd largest search engine.

Yes, really. Look here, and here.

And what is the number 1 search engine? Google, of course.

Google owns Youtube so you can say that Google really owns the #1 and #2 spots where people are searching.

One could argue that YouTube is not a search engine at all because it doesn't serve any documents outside of its own site, technically making the search function exclusively internal.

But going by the sheer number of searches going on in YouTube, and for this blog post, I'll consider Youtube a search engine.

This is why it makes sense for you to be on Youtube. Your business should be on Youtube and if you have a brand or a product, or even if you are your own brand, Youtube is something you should make part of your strategy.

There's Talent and There's Hustle.

Sometimes it seems that our efforts to create new engaging videos don't really pay off.

We find that despite all the effort planning, shooting, and editing a video, they turn out very low views and even lower engagement.

Well, here's what I have found. There are two things when it comes to any type of work, including being a content creator. One is talent, and the other is hustle.

This whole list is about hustle. It's about all the stuff you can do to beat the competition even if they are more talented than you.

When I've done all the heavy lifting part of a video, and I think I'm done. Just before my video is about to be published, I go through this list of stuff.

The work you put into this list can seem overwhelming, but take one step at a time and just check off each item as you go. After a few times, the process will become second nature.

This list is not comprehensive, but it's a collection of 11 best practices to follow just before and immediately after you publish a video.

Without further ado, here is the list I follow:

1 Add to a Playlist

Increase watch time by adding your video to a playlist of yours. Adding videos to related playlists gives you a chance of getting more views when people find one of your videos through a playlist.

Playlists show up in search results and sometimes videos in the playlist come up as results so when people play such a video, they're likely to see other videos in that playlist.

Bonus - make sure it's added to a "series playlist." Series playlists are special playlists, you can read more about them here.

Bonus 2 - make sure you create a good description for the playlist so that it helps with search results. You can even add short descriptions for each video which will help with search results as well.

2 Add an End Screen

When your video is over, help direct the viewer where you want to by linking to other videos or adding a subscribe button. You can add up to 4 items on your end screen, including any video, a recommended video for the viewer, a playlist, and the lastest upload.

End screens can be up to 20 seconds long. You can see how I do my end-screens on any of my videos.

Some YouTubers add a small video segment at the end of their video to talk about the end screens and actively direct the user to click on them, others like me, just ad a static slide for 10 - 20 seconds.

You can decide how to do it, or you can start with a static slide like me, and then later on make end video segments, up to you. But just use the end screens, they help.

This is an explanation of end screens, straight from the horse's mouth. And below is a good video by Youtube expert Darrel Eves, I recommend you check those two things out.

Darrel talks a little bit about annotations, the precursor to end screens. Then quickly gets into a tutorial on how to add end screens. Worth a few minutes of your time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4dYiyCg6q8

3 Add Tags to Your Title

It's generally important to have at least 1 or 2 of your tags appear in your title to help with search optimization on those terms.

This sounds confusing, but it basically means that you should have 2 tags from your tag collection (found under your description) match with part of the title of your video.

I have a feeling that tags will eventually go away as artificial intelligence engines get better at recognizing visual and spoken content, but for the time being, tags help you organize and categorize your video so that more people can find it.

Tags can be added in their own section, use at least 2 of these tags as part of your title to reinforce the topics and type of searches your video will appear in.

4 Add More Tags

YouTube allows up to 500 characters when adding tags. Use as many as possible and keep tags relevant to your video.

#3 above and this can go in any order, but when it comes to tags, you can add up to 500 characters worth of tags. Use them wisely and if possible, use up all your characters to maximize the chance of your video being discovered.

TubeBuddy helps you keep track of how many characters you've used and also helps you pick the right tags to use in your video. Learn more about TubeBuddy here.

5 Add Info Cards

Add Info Cards in order to provide relevant external information to your video - a related video of yours or your website, etc.

Info cards are those little pop-up icons that come up during some Youtube videos, they create a clickable call to action for your viewers to get more information about a video.

Info cards can link out to other videos, playlists, or even your website. You can add up to 5 cards to any video, and they are time-stamped so they can come up at the exact time you pick.

Sunny Lenarduzzi has a great video tutorial geared towards influencers and entrepreneurs, I highly recommend you take a look, it's only 3 minutes.

6 Add Captions

Adding captions will not only help visually impaired users consume your content, but it can also boost your search rank!

There is some evidence to suggest that videos with accurate captions tend to do better in search results and may attract more engagement compared to their counterparts without captions.

I recently made a video about this where I explain that I've seen around 5-15% increase in average on videos with close captions versus those that don't have it or have the automatic Youtube generated close captions.

I recommend you add your own and don't rely just on the ones that Youtube creates.

Here's that video if you want to see how to create subtitles from scratch with Youtube.

7 Upload High-Resolution Thumbnail

Ensure that your thumbnail shows up crisp and clear on all devices by publishing a high-resolution version. It's important to make sure your thumbnail is eye-catching but also make sure it's high-resolution.

Sometimes you can make a thumbnail on a mobile device and it looks great in that screen, but when you make it larger it turns out it's blurry or looks like it's low quality.

Thumbnails are the first impression when people see your video in search results or in your page so put some effort into it and make sure it's of high quality.

You can use Canva, Photoshop, or other apps to help you create crisp and eye-catching thumbnails. TubeBuddy even has a built-in thumbnail generator you can use on the fly.

One thing to note is that you must have a verified Youtube account to be able to upload custom thumbnails. Here are more details about video thumbnails.

8 Turn on Monetization

This video doesn't have monetization turned on which means you're not earning any ad revenue from it.

If you are a Youtube partner, you should turn monetization on for your video before you publishit. This will help you generate revenue from your video and it should encourage Youtube to show your video more frequently since they will also make money from it.

In order to have monetization available for your channel, you must meet certain requirements. You can learn more about those requirements here.

9 Make Your Title Between 20 and 70 Characters

You generally want your video title to be long enough to be descriptive but not too long to where it becomes hard to read.

Just like tags, you have a limit on the number of characters you can use in your title, but the ideal size for a title is between 20 to 70 characters. This is long enough to be descriptive and eye-catching but not so long that it becomes a burden to read the title.

Technically, you can go longer than 70 characters, but this is the cutoff mark for the title when it shows up on search results so in most cases, the viewer doesn't see anything beyond the 70 characters until they click on the video to watch it.

10 Get a like on Facebook

YouTube isn't the only place you should be sharing your video - make sure you tell your connections on Facebook about it.

This one is easy, and it also serves as a reminder to share your video on Facebook.

Whether you share it on your Facebook business page, fan page or your personal profile, share it so that other people can see it and hopefully at least a few people will like the post on Facebook.

You can also share your video in a group, but the likes from groups may or may not be tracked. Always share the video to your personal profile AND a business page if you have one.

This helps with your visibility, SEO and social signals.

11 Pin a Comment

Take control of your comment section by "pinning" a comment that you choose to the top of the list (usually your own comment).

This is a recent trend and while I can't say exactly how important it is, it is very clear that you should do this for all your videos as a way to start up the conversation and encourage others to leave their own comments.

It used to be that you would put a lot of information in the description, but in most cases, people will not click on the "see more" link to reveal your entire description.

A comment, on the other hand, is visible right away and if it's the pinned comment, it will show at the top so you can add more information about the video, ask a question or provide additional links.

Many people will feel inclined to reply to a comment by the creator instead of leaving their own comment.

In conclusion

So this is a good list for you to follow, keep it on a spreadsheet, print it and stick it next to your desk. Whatever you need to do to keep this list handy, do it. If you follow these, you should see an increase in views and hopefully engagement as well.

You still have to strive to create informational, educational and entertaining content, but when you've done your best in that regard, follow this list and I think you'll see results.

The Tubebuddy extension I mentioned helps you accomplish and track all of these items for you, like item #3, with TubeBuddy, is a breeze.

If you want to look at that, it's free and available for all major browsers. Learn more about it here: https://tubebuddy.com/youtubehelp. And yes, if you were curious, I'm an affiliate for them. But I also use them for every single video I publish and I'm slowly working my way back through all my previous videos.

This is a quick video tutorial on how to transcribe and create your own closed captions for your Youtube videos. Sometimes these are called subtitles.

The reasons for adding subtitles to your video are many.

If your video is properly closed captioned, more people can watch it. Closed captions are used by people that can't listen to a video to be able to read or interpret the message from the video.

Youtube creates automatic closed captions, but they're not always accurate.

One more benefit for the closed captions is that you can describe sounds and activity that the automatic captions won't ever do.

You can even add an introduction text where you plug your company. I do this at the beginning of the introduction and I say something like "closed captioning by notagrouch.com".

I think it looks pro and it looks like the captions you see on movies and TV. You can see that in the video below if you have CC turned on.

The button should be available if CC is available.

I also decided to spend more time on my own captions because I noticed an increase in youtube views recently after I started following best practices recommended both by Youtube and other Youtube experts.

So I made a video on how to do it. This is when you want to do them from scratch. There are two other methods that are more suitable for making adjustments to existing transcripts.

I also have a feeling that closed captions can or may affect search engine rankings. It makes sense to me that they would, but I'm not sure yet. Here's that tutorial for now:

It's been a while since we did a 90 day video challenge so I thought why not restart it for the new year!

If you don't know what the 90 day video challenge is all about, here's the scoop.

For 90 days, you will be required to create, upload and publish a video to Youtube. The goal is to get you started with video content creation or to help you get to the next level.

Today, video is really important for any business, and while Youtube has been around for a little over 10 years now, independent video creators are just starting to flourish and they're starting to become mainstream.

What better place than here, what better time than now? ~ RATMClick To Tweet

Whether you have a brick and mortar business, an online business, a blog, or all of the above, video can help you grow and besides your time and a small investment in equipment, it's virtually free marketing!

The focus of the challenge will be to increase brand awareness, to generate more traffic and ultimately generate more sales for your business.

If you don't have a Youtube channel, this is the best opportunity to start. If you haven't done much with your existing Youtube channel, then this is your chance to step up your game.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLmNrWO0Hpw

Youtube is a really big website, it is ranked by Alexa as the #2 website in the planet. Youtube is so big that it would be a terrible mistake to ignore it when considering a good balanced marketing strategy. But Youtube can be intimidating to some people. If you haven't used it a lot before, or have only used it to watch a few videos once in a while, it is time you learn a little more about it.

The following tips will help you get more comfortable with Youtube and will help you get the most out of it. This is especially useful if you want to grow your own channel, or just be more efficient when using Youtube.

Also! If you know one I didn't list in here, feel free to leave it in the comments.

7 Tips and tricks for Youtube power-users.

#1 Filter the search results for something specific using the search bar

If you use search engine operators, you can refine your search and spot new videos about a topic you care about or want to cover in your blog. If you have never used search engine operators, I'll give you a crash course right now by showing you step by step.

Here I use an example with the words "Orange County"

I want to search Youtube for that keyword, but when I first put it in, just plain and simple the searches I received were not relevant to what I wanted. Also notice that there are close to 1 million results. I can narrow it down easily.

Notice the plain search for the keyword: orange county

They were lots of pages (almost a million results) with irrelevant results I didn't want to see. I was looking for local updates to the local area of "orange county" in California. I wanted recent updates too. Take a look at the results, there's only five of them.

Some keywords I knew I had to eliminate immediately from past experience. The words: choppers, florida, repair and "home repair". If you try to follow along with this, you'll find some words like this of your own. These words are irrelevant to our context.

I wanted all those keywords eliminated from the results so I used the "minus" symbol to omit those words. I could have used -"Orange County Choppers" too and and I should have received the same results.

To eliminate keywords, it usually takes a few tries. Each time we add a negative keyword, we find that removing the word opens up the results to show you other, potentially new, keywords. You may have to repeat this process a few times to clean up the keywords you don't want. I eventually had something like the screenshot below.

I continued to refined the search by eliminating these undesirable keywords by adding a negative (minus) symbol in front of them. For a double keyword, like "home repair" we need to add it with quotes.

I refined the search and instead of just searching for Orange County, I used the words "Orange County" by designating them as a single keyword, locked together in quotation marks.

I did this for the same reason I just explained. I want to find specific instances of the words "orange county" together.

Notice the refined search with the "-" (minus) symbol.Even after I filtered all the negative words out, I still had some results I didn't like or need or want.

Check this out, the screenshot was too good to pass up and I still would like to show you how I ended up filtering my search.

Search is now refined and crafted better using double quotes and negative words.

Wow, did you see the title of the video of the last result in the screenshot? That's why I said earlier that I had to show you the screenshot. If you missed it, go look at it. I highlighted it.

That's the kind of stuff I was looking for. Not for that content specifically but I was looking for that type of video in that it's a relatively new video about "Orange County," but I still have a lot of other stuff that it's old or irrelevant in the search results.

The next tip is to explain how to refine your search even further.

#2 Refine Your Search with Built in Search Filters

If you were not able to use search operators like I showed you on Tip #1, or would like to refine the search further then you can use Youtube's built-in search filters as I'll demonstrate next.

I'll continue using the example from Tip #1 above.

If I wanted to find more recent videos only, and ignore anything that is older than a month, or the past year, I can use a filter for that.

You can also filter by 2 time brackets. Videos shorter than 4 minutes and longer than 20 minutes.

You can filter by all kinds of parameters and you also have options to sort your results

Using the filter function you can also sort the video by upload date or by view count. Those are two factors used to find out which video may be the original one.

That leads to power user tip #3.

#3 How To Find an Original Video

Sometimes you do a search you think Youtube should give you the most important result. Maybe you think it should give you the best result. Or instead you think of it as the most relevant.

A friend recently looked for Psy's Gangnam Style video and mistakenly found a video that had been uploaded only a few months back. If you're not familiar with it, the video Gangnam Style was released in 2012, not 2016. The original video has accumulated over 2 Billion views.

Somehow, a copy cat video was showing on the front page and had accumulated over 2 million views! Unknbenonwnst to my friend, he thought he was looking at Psy's video and told me that it only had 2 million views.

I told him, impossible!

For some reason Psy's actual official video didn't show on the front page when he searched. Maybe his settings, or his past search history was showing him a different result. To be sure, a way to make sure the video you're looking for is the right one, is to sort the results.

But what do each of those expectations mean when you search? The most important, the best result, the most relevant? Each definition may be different for each person.

Use the sort feature to remove all doubts.

Usually the first video to be uploaded tends to be the original, but the view counts may be an indication of which one is the "official" one, maybe based on a re-distribution deal.

Sometimes people, especially artists let their videos be played on other channels and they may get more views. Sometimes the original video is removed and only the licensed video gets published around.

Sometimes your search may not give you the result for the original video you're looking for. Instead, you may see a video about the video you're looking for, like news coverage, or a reaction video.

You may also see copycat channels or videos trying to get some traffic to their channel by redistributing a popular video. They try to rank themselves by using someone else's videos.

You have to be a little smarter than the algorithms and the to find a video that might be the first, or the original. Another reason to sort by number of views might be to find the top 10 videos with a specific keyword search.

This leads to the next power tip!

By the way, if you're finding these tips to be useful, could you take a second to share this article in your favorite social media? buttons available at the top and bottom of the article. Thank you!

#4 Become a Master Youtube Curator With the Watch Later Built in List

Now that you know a few tips about how to search for videos, you know how to find them fast and early. But you don't actually have time to watch them all right now do you?

Maybe you're doing research for a blogpost. Maybe your'e collecting videos to learn to do something. Or maybe you're collecting videos in a topic to share with a group later on. In order to consume the video information you need, you need to master the "Watch Later" Youtube list.

I use this list as a wide-mouth funnel to watch things that I'm interested in.

Videos in Youtube have a small clock-like icon that appears when you hover your mouse over them. Use this when you're scanning through your search results, playlists, recommended sections, additional videos to watch and other similar groups of videos.

By using the Watch Later list, you don't loose focus of your research now and your immediate goal. The first pass at any type of research consists largely in pinpointing a large group of resources that you're going to enlist in your research. That list may be made from links, or books, or movies, but in our case, it's a list of videos.

This is how you add videos to the "Watch Later" list. See screenshot:

notice the "clock" icon that appears when I mouse over the video. Clicking on that, adds the video to the Watch Later list.

Once you feel that you gathered enough videos for whatever purpose you want, then you can go watch the videos in your "Watch Later" list. As you watch one video you'll see recommendations for other videos on the sidebar.

You access the Watch Later list under your main YouTube menu.

As you watch the videos in this list, they will be marked as "watched" and you can use the button at the top that says "remove watched" and this will purge your list from those videos.

You could stop there with the Watch Later list, but if you want to be a video curator, the watch later list is just the beginning. From here, you can pass each video to another list where it may live indefinitely.

#5 Become a Master Curator by Managing Several Lists

One thing that you can do in order to curate videos for your blog, for a group or just for entertainment is to use the main watch later list as a type of "catch all" list, like the funnel I mentioned, then sort the videos from there.

Then when you have time to watch videos and go through a good portion of your watch later list, you can make your experience much richer by saving these videos somewhere else.

As you watch a video, sort it into a list with other videos in the same topic or genre. This is will help you find videos again. But can also help you curate videos for other uses.

When you watch a video you can add it to a playlist, you can create a new list if you don't have one that you want to use already in your account.

Under the main section of links in Youtube, you'll see Library, that's where your lists become available for browsing. You can see four lists of mine here, Affiliate Marketing, friends of og, Social Media Related and Food.

As you create lists, if you do a good job of curating them for a type of search or a specific topic, your lists may start showing up on Google and Youtube search results. This is a good thing and can bring you new visitors to your channel.

#6 Watch it All, Faster.

Now that you have all these videos in your Watch Later list and a few other lists to curate videos, you need extra time in the day to watch the videos. What if I could give you a few minutes each day to watch more content.

I can give you extra minutes right now. How's that? you may be asking...

Youtube has a little known feature that allows you to speed up videos so you can get through them faster. Sometimes you may be looking at a long lecture. Or a how to video where the presenter speaks very slowly.

Use the cogwheel to access the speed settings to speed up or slowdown the playback.

You can double the playback speed on Youtube to avoid slow videos. This works for speeches, tutorials, interviews and other similar type of content. Doubling the speed is usually too much.

You'll find the sweet spot between 1.25x or 1.5x speed up on the playback. I believe you save about 20% (2 out of 10 minutes) using the 1.25x and 30% (3:20 out of 10 minutes) using 1.5x and 50% (5 out of 10 minutes) at 2x.

The opposite also works. If the presenter is speaking too fast, or you want to slow it down in order to transcribe the video then you can slow it down.

#7 Find New Content Through Recommended Channels

Youtube knows a lot about your viewing habits if you browse the site while you're logged in to your gmail account. This can lead to some really good recommendations for new stuff to watch.

Look on the Home page and on the various recommended sections.

The recommendations in Youtube come from a mix of popular and trending videos, past viewing history and whether you have interacted with certain channels or videos.

You can increase these recommendations just by clicking the thumbs up in the videos you like, subscribing to channels you are interested in and watching videos from your watch later playlist and other related videos shown on the side bar.

Thanks for reading and sharing if you found this useful! Please take a moment to rate this article, the rating scale is just below. Thank you!

And that wraps up this list of tips. Did you find them useful? Do you have other ones you'd like to share with me? Please leave your comments or questions.

This has been on my mind for a while now. Can you really make good money with Uber? My initial response to that would be: nah, no way!

But recently in my trip to Las Vegas, we used two Uber rides and the driver in one of them was very friendly. He told us he makes great money and quit his other job to do Uber full time. Says he works about 9 hours each day. I don't think we asked him his age, but the driver was young, probably early twenties or late teens so he's happy doing the hustle.

He says there is a high demand in Las Vegas all day long, 24 7 he says. He often gets rides that are worth more because the demand for drivers is so high at that point, they call that a multiplier.

But let's be a little more realistic, you will not find crowds gathering outside a river of luxury hotels like you do in Las Vegas in many other places.

Maybe a couple of cities in the country can offer that consistent number of crowds to provide work for a large pool of Uber drivers. So I have always wondered, can you really make money with Uber? Well, the mystery has been cracked. Once you find the average hourly rate that a Uber driver makes you won't look at Uber again.

How do you find the average hourly wage for an Uber driver? You watch this video of course!

Why Uber is Terrible - Explained

I haven't tried it myself, and if I did it would only be for fun, to try the experience because I can think of a dozen things I can do with internet marketing that pay way more than Uber, and don't require risking your life or safety.

For Vlog #11 we have brunch at home where we make some thick delicious french toast. Claire and I had to get some extra ingredients before the party got started.

As we head out to the Dot Com Lunch event, something strange started happening with our faces. You'll have to watch to find out.

During this Dot Com Lunch, I get a chance to catch up with one of our members and see what he's been up to.

As a side note on this whole vlogging thing, I must say that it is a pretty tough challenge to make a daily vlog that is interesting. There's a few that I haven't gotten around to publish already so I feel as if it's really easy to fall behind.

Doing a daily vlog, or even a daily blog is a challenge of commitment and dedication. Hopefully I can hang onto it for the duration of the 90 day challenge. If I can do that, then I'll try to continue further and do 365.

Vlog 11 now available in Youtube or Vimeo

One of the things I realized early on is that I need a lot more organization in order to produce a daily video with some sort of common thread. So I created an index to help me for now and to help you find the newest videos and those that you might have missed. You can find the vlog index here.

What are Vlogs? Vlogs are somewhat of a new trend. They're short videos, 3 to 15 minutes long and they're updates about whatever the publisher is into. You can think of them as home-made reality TV although some of the more popular ones have really high production quality.

This is my nth attempt at doing a vlog series and we'll see if this one works out well. Most of the problems I've had with previous series relate to my own roadblocks. I believe I've eliminated some of those things that stopped me from doign it before and this time around it should work.

The first Vlog is just me spending some time with the kids and the family and I also invite you to learn about internet marketing, I invite you to invest in yourself.

As usual, you can watch it on Youtube on my regular channel or just below:

Without further ado, here's Vlog #1

Don't you think it's time to invest in yourself? You should take step towards achieving financial success. The training program I talk about is only available in limited numbers because it is not your regular online training course. There are coaches that will actually help you along the way so new spots may be unavailable from time to time.

Click here to learn more about the 21 Day Training program.

When I have a business training session with a client, or a training session with a new student to learn internet marketing I offer the option to record the session for them. Then I sell them the edited recording of the session so they can keep it for later viewing, studying, reviewing, etc. (click here to skip the story, show me how to download a Youtube file).

Theses videos tend to be huge! They are high quality recordings of our Skype interactions and my desktop training session all in one. Most of the time, I use Dropbox or a similar file sharing service so the client or student can download the video of their training session.

But sometimes, file sharing doesn't work exactly as planned. An alternative way of sharing big video files is through Youtube. Technically, I could just share the video in Youtube privately and call it a day but I also would like the client to have a copy of the file for their own offline viewing.

There are some caveats with this method, primarily loss of quality, and privacy. When using this method, the very best version of the video that a client can download will have the quality at 720p. You can read all about video resolution here. The video also must be set to unlisted or public, it cannot be private.

In my case, my videos are always better than 1080p and I would like the client to have that quality. But in a pinch, this may work just to get the file over to the other person so they can start reviewing it.

I also want to put a little disclaimer out there, I don't condone the illegal download of videos, mkay? So don't think that this is for that purpose.

So let's get to it:

How To Download a Youtube Video File

If you are not the owner of the video, find the video you want to download and get the URL for the video.

Your URL will be different of course, but you need to copy this... you'll paste it somewhere else in the next step.

Copy the URL for the video and open up a new tab or window in your browser.

Visit KeepVid and paste the URL in the box and press the gray download button on the right. This will return a long list of files that you can download as you can see in the screenshot below.

There are other services out there that work simiarly, but this was the only one that didn't try to install some junk in my computer or tried to mislead me in some way or another. The ads can be deceiving sometimes a little which is why I made it very clear where to get your file from.

To get the highest quality file, select the 720p option that I highlighted in the screenshot.

Enter the URL of the Youtube video to download

To download, right-click on the link and use the "save as" function. This file ended up being about 900mb, compared to the original 5.6GB file so you can be sure the video file was heavily compressed and also evidently by the 720p limitation, it was scaled down as well.

In the past, Youtube allowed us to download up to 1080, but they removed that option. Who knows if they'll allow it in the future.

What if you are the owner of the youtube video?

If you are the owner of the video, you can download the video directly from the video manager section. Unfortunately the original file is not available, you'll also only be able to download the 720p version of the file.

The only benefit for you as an owner is how simple it is to download the file, and you don't have to go to a 3rd party website to do it.

Go to your video manager section in Youtube, this link will take you there.

Then find the video you want to download. You'll see a dropdown menu available to the side of the video. Clicking on this will reveal many options about your video. To download the file, select Download MP4.

This will not be the full resolution original file, but it saves you the trouble of using a 3rd party site to download the file.

Easy to find, make sure you are logged in to your Youtube account before trying this.

Depending on your specific computer settings, you may or may not be prompted to select a location to save the file and give it a name. If you don't get this option, chances are that the file was just downloaded directly to your downloads folder, it will be titled to match the title of the video in Youtube and not the original file.

You now should have a video file from the youtube file you wanted.

And if you have any problems watching either one of the video files, don't forget to install VLC Media Player, good for any platform and it's free.

Google keeps killing features in their services. Here's another example of their behavior. While you can't really complain, it is quite frustrating so this is a bit of a rant but offers a basic solution to the problem.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that finds this as a problem.

The post Youtube Sharing to Google Plus Disabled. The Beginning of The End? appeared first on Digital Marketing Through Content & Influence.

I know I mentioned in the past when I found out about Google+ getting dismantled. It seems that things are moving forward in that direction.

Recently, I noticed that you no longer can share a video with a circle of people on GooglePlus. Currently the only options for privacy when sharing a Youtube video are:

Private

Public

Unlisted

There used to be a fourth option you could use. You could share a video directly to GooglePlus and share it only with a specific circle. That was a really neat feature.

I actually would like to complain to Google on this one. First, they sell us on using their services as a life-archive with the Dear Sophie video. Heartwarming right?

I bet you there was a surge of new accounts when that video came out during father's day years ago. If you are guilty of creating at least a Gmail account for your kids in advance of them being able to use it, raise your hand!

Guilty!

But I can't help to be irritated with Google giving us features to use then taking them away.

This "hidden" fourth option of sharing video was great. You could share video with a specific group of people from 1 up to the maximum people allowed per circle in Google +.

I could share a family video with only 10 - 12 people. It was great. Now the best option is to post the video to youtube, make it "unlisted" then share the link with the people you want to share it via GooglePlus or Email or whatever.

The problem with this approach is that the link is really viewable by anybody that has the link. So if you wanted so share some personal videos with just a very limited group of people, you simply can't anymore.

I really don't understand why people don't like GooglePlus that much. I think it's a great service, but the problem is that people, critics and others tried to make Google+ a feature by feature competitor to Facebook. Intstead, Google+ had its features and Facebook has its features.

So Google now has disconnected this great feature I loved. In a way, it's a good thing. It makes me get back to reality.

We are at the whim of these companies if we put all our content in their service. You must be the owner of your own content! Get your own blog where you can really share your content any way you want. All the cloud services are nice as additional services but they own you!

Your own blog is your own blog. You decide. By the way, speaking of sharing photos and videos go check out the latest posts at my Daddy blog.

College Humor has been around for a while (website). I think they were around years before Youtube started. That's ancient in Internet years. But if you're looking for something to watch CollegeHumor is one good channel to add to your subscriptions and regular "watch later" list.

College Humor now produces mostly short comedy skits and they're usually pretty good. They have videos targeted at young men and women. It is college humor indeed, but you can think of most of their content as pop culture and trivia.

If you want some to add some humor to your life and regular television won't cut it. Then you should check this channel out and join over 9 Million subscribers that already know about it.

Sometimes the skits are cheesy, sometimes they're cool but they are always well produced. They are a mix of humor, pop culture and trivia. Here are some of my latest favorite videos.

You're hanging out with your friends, or your girlfriend (or wife) and this question may pop into your mind. Am I basic? Well, this is How to tell if You're a Basic Bro.

In the trivia department, this is one of their best ones in my opinion. 13 Things You Are True, But Aren't.

One of my favorites from them is also the most viewed video in their channel with over 57 million views. It might be past its prime but it's still great; a parody of Gangnam Style, this is Mitt Romney Style. Hey, Wealthy Ladies!

I must have told you about it before. Google photos has a feature called autoawesome which takes videos and photos from your albums and backups and creates cool little highlight videos. Here's another one. This came out really good I think.

It was 100% automatically made by Google autoawesome. The music is good, the transitions are cool and the video clips and photos were good too. Sometimes Google will grab scenes or photos that you don't necessarily want to include in your video, but this time it did a great job.

I wonder what is going to happen to this when Google Plus finally gets dismantled as rumor has it.

Rob Dyke produces a weekly show called Seriously Strange. Rob has made its way into my subscriptions in Youtube and I wanted to give you a heads up about this great channel.

Seriously Strange is produced in a weekly basis and new videos are released on Wednesdays. Topics range widely but mostly focus in the bizarre, occult or right down disturbing. If this is your cup of tea or you want to add a little variety to your life then I think you should check it out.

It's dark, but fun and entertaining. By entertaining I mean that some of the videos will keep you up at night. Seriously, nightmares are made of this.

Some of my favorite videos from Seriously Strange are below. They range from a few minutes to about 10 minutes so they're easy to watch.

I'm not alone in liking this channel...

Addicted to the #seriouslystrange series its so interesting

— Paul (@PaulKirkpatr1ck) April 28, 2015

Decided it was a good idea to scare myself silly by catching up on #SeriouslyStrange by @TheRobDyke. I may never sleep again...

— Starfish (@wicked_roses) April 27, 2015

And if you're a marketing type (like me) trying to crack the nut of building an audience, building a community and getting a huge level of engagement then follow the old tried and true method, like Rob does; create amazing content. You too can get raving fans like this:

Catching up on #SeriouslyStrange.
Can't believe I let myself get so behind in the midst of musical rehearsals.
Sorry, @TheRobDyke

— Olivia (@oliviarsarver) April 26, 2015

With over 1.2 million subscribers, I'm sure you'll find many videos entertaining. I like this channel because the videos have a high production value and the content is often new and unique. Rob sometimes calls on the audience to give him ideas to feed this creepy video feed. You can get in touch with Rob on Twitter @TheRobDyke.

Pranks are all the rage in Youtube, but what happens when a prank goes horribly wrong? Here's a compilation of some of the pranks that went horribly wrong. Pranks that Went Horribly Wrong #SeriouslyStrange

There are many things we can't explain in life. But disease is something that is terrifying when you can't tell what is causing it, what it is and whether you will survive it. This is Unexplainable Diseases #SeriouslyStrange

Then there is the hunger that some of us have for the mysterious. In this case Rob finds the most Terrifying Unsolved Mysteries, and nails it, again.

I cover some of the features Optinmonster has for you there.

My favorite is the exit intent feature, but they have added quite a few others that are worth checking out, so I show you a few in the video. More info about this whole thing on the link after the video too, where I published this originally. But here's the video in case you missed it.

Using Optinmonster, you'll increase your subscribe or optin rates by up to 600%. Optinmonster is available here. But what is it and why do you care?

Optinmonster's biggest strength is the Exit Intent feature. Look at this short video and you'll see how it works.

The basic premise is that the Exit Intent feature will show a lightbox pop-up inviting your visitors to sign up for your newsletter before they leave your webpage. It's brilliant.

And it doesn't have to be a newsletter. You can giveaway a gift, or coupons or anything you want to offer in exchange for the email address & name of your visitor.

If you want to know more about Exit Intent and how it works and why you want it, visit Optinmonster, or check this post out: Exit Intent by Optinmonster What is it and Why do I want it?

Life was much simpler back then, but my itch for the entrepreneurial was kicking in again. This video was taken at the food court on Michelson and Culver in Irvine after getting some awesome food from Tacos & Co. I decided to put some chips out for the birds and record them.

This is one of the websites I use the most. I use it to find inspiration, assets that I use in other bigger projects, buttons, or even U.I. elements. When I use images from this website my production time is cut significantly I don't have to worry about copyright or infringing on anybody's rights. The membership to this website allows me to use the pictures on various projects I work in.

If you don't feel like you can afford the website membership, you can always buy just the images that you need on a case-by-case basis. You can find almost anything you're looking for in this website if you want to check it out this it right here. You can find more information at Shutterstock.com

If you look around my website you'll notice a lot of the times images have a small caption that says image by Shutterstock. Those are images I got through the membership and I'm able to use them free and clear without worrying about getting sued or infringing on anyone's rights so plan check it out at the very least you can always take advantage of their daily or rather weekly free downloads.

This video shows you how to save you tons of time when you're leaving comments around different blogposts. If you don't know, leaving good comments on other blogs is one of the best ways to build an audience and getting to know the author of the blog. And more importantly, it is a great way for the author to get to know you. This opens up the door for guest blogging opportunities, networking events, and of course increased traffic and readership.

Recently at #SMMOC we talked about Vine. Twitter's latest attempt at staying relevant. I gotta say it is pretty interesting and more compelling than I originally thought. Vine is pretty cool but if you don't have an iPhone, you're out of luck. But I went online and found some alternatives for Android users. Primarily I found Viddy.

So what is Vine? Vine is a little video app that lets you share video clips with your friends on Twitter, but the video clips are just six seconds long. You'll be surprised how interesting they can be. If you don't believe me, get the app or check out an online viewer for vine it's called Vinepeek.

I've been describing Viddy to friends as Instagram for video. that's the easiest way to explain it. If they don't know what instagram is then you can say that viddy is a quick video trailer maker. Or an app to edit short little videos and give them some effects and a soundtrack.

Viddy's time limit is 15 seconds. But like Instagram, you can pick several effects that get applied to your video. In fact most of the experience is like Instagram's. You pick a video from your gallery, then you select a 15 second segment. After your selection is made, then you can apply an effect. You select a thumbnail to be the representative image for the video and you can also apply a 15 second soundtrack from a preset list of choices.

Once you've setup your video effects and stuff, you can give it a title, description and share it out to your networks. You have built-in sharing abilities for Facebook, Youtube (yes it uploads there too!), Twitter and Tumblr. The only problem I've ran into with Viddy so far is that it doesn't seem to save the authorization for some of these apps. Like I have to grant permission to access Twitter each time.

With that said, check out my Viddy Profile in my Social Networks Page, or enjoy some videos I made over the past couple days with Viddy. Pretty cool stuff.

Just me walking into the Post office. A crappy little video looks more glamorous after you run it through viddy's filters & add soundtracks.

@WaterClaire's friend waking up a bit

@WaterClaire meeting her friend. She has no idea. This one video didn't get a soundtrack, just an effect and the 15 second clip.

You can use videos that are already on your phone. You don't have to use a new video. This one is from when we were still in the hospital with @WaterClaire

This one has a video trailer feel to it because of the music. Just a little video I was doing with her, this one has an effect and soundtrack applied to it.

As the baby approaches, we have to unclutter the house. We have been collecting stuff over the years. Some of this stuff is cool, other is useful but a lot of it is junk. But they say that one man's trash is another's treasure so why not make some money as you get rid of stuff.

I asked a couple people when was the last time they sold something on eBay and they just looked at me like I was an alien. They didn't even have an eBay account. I was blown away, it is 2012, almost 2013 and some people have never even used eBay. In the other hand, I just got an email from eBay congratulating me on being a member for 12 years!

So I thought I'd show you how to post your old computer up for sale. This works for anything really and there are just a couple tricks that I'm going to show you to make your listing better. I have about a half dozen old computers that I am going to list on eBay. Whatever doesn't sell there I will sell at a garage sale in the upcoming weeks. After all, not everything sells on eBay.

In the video I cover a few key tips to make this enjoyable and efficient. I tell you how to use Dropbox, how to list your item so it will sell, and how to enhance the listing so it is more appealing. If this is too complicated for you then maybe you should just pay one of those services that sell your stuff for you, bu they'll take a hefty percentage of your earnings.

Enjoy!

This is the Italian carousel that was in a small plaza in Italy, to be precise this was around the corner from our hotel named "The Pierre" in Florence. It is or was in the corner of Piazza della Repubblica / Via de' Brunelleschi. You can see it from this screenshot I took from google maps and from other pictures I found, it seems that maybe it's a seasonal or portable thing. Similar to like they have ice rinks during winter in some places. Because many pictures show the place without the carousel.

google maps picture of the carousel

Our Italy Trip

In case you didn't know, and I'll tell you more about it in upcoming blogposts, I had the fantastic opportunity to go to Italy with my wife for our honeymoon. I've posted pictures here and there. Some in instagram, some in Facebook and everywhere else. Starting with this post, I thought I would start sharing them all in one spot instead, I'm going to try to use the tag: Italy trip.

We did a few tours here and there, but this was one of my favorite moments and it wasn't planned or anything. Just a light rain and this place.

Same carousel, different angle.

Timehop, one of my favorite services as of lately reminded me that a year ago I posted about this video on Facebook. I thought it's timely still and I like to share it with you this time here, on my blog.

The video is about realizing how short each moment is. How we have our bucket list of things to do, and we postpone them because, today we're tired. Because the premiere of The Apprentice is coming up.

This guy, Ric Elias describes his experience while his flight crashed. A lot of realizations can happen in a moment. Some of us won't get that wake up call so that we can re-align our priorities. In an instant everything can be changed.

He leaves us with a task, to imagine yourself in this same situation he just described. And he asks: "how would you change?" if you had this gift, the miracle of a second chance. What would you get done that you are waiting to get done because you think you're going to be here for ever?

This was great. A staged prank of a few hundred people in Grand Central Station in NY. They all freeze for about 5 minutes while bystanders wonder what the heck is going on. It is really funny to hear the conversations people have about it while its going on. Thanks Ali for sending it in!

Two videos for you guys today. More explosions!

This one was sent in by my Mom. Apparently the video is the latest "craze" on viral marketing. She thought it was real, as thousands of other people have. Frankly I hadn't seen it or even heard of it until she sent it in. I could tell right away that it was fake, it looks manufactured from the beginning and you can tell that when the kid throws the dynamite stick into the water, the smoke trail doesn't quite work out. Actually, you can tell its fake when you see them handling the dynamite stick... there's something about it that just looks fake.

The best article I found to corroborate the fact that the video is fake was one by the Daily Mail. The article explains that the video is part of a marketing campaign put out by Quicksilver.
