In reply to Wendy Cobrda. Definitely Wendy, lots of planning went on in this event. I don't know if I would risk my life either, if you read the story of the guy that jumped in 1960, things did go wrong and could have been worse. And then they still did it this time! Crazy. And I agree with you, Failure is not being willing to try... but I still have my limits.

In reply to Cliff. Cliff, I think this was very similar to what you describe from 1969. I thought about other events where people have gathered round the tv/radio to watch and listen and I felt chills thinking about it.

Oh, how I wish this had been written about 6 weeks ago, Oscar! One of my clients just launched a new business and did not take the time to adequately prepare pre-launch. He is currently in the phase of ‘correcting things after the fact’ – and recognizing that some extra attention to details and logistics would have made a big difference!

I want to also mention that I watched the jump “live” and experienced a great sense of awe and wonder – at the visionary Felix is, the innovation, preparation, execution – and the marketing! An even to remembered for years!

I didn’t watch it live, but I’ve been reading about it for months. Klout had a Red Bull perk — an opportunity to receive their magazine. It was amazing how much preparation went into this, and how serious mistakes could be.

I don’t know if I would risk my life for something like this. Anything COULD have happened. (Thank god they were smart enough to delay the launch and follow protocol.)

I think there is a lesson to be learned there for business, as well. When you think through what can happen you have to weigh the options of starting a business and potentially failing, or not taking a chance at all. And midstream, sometimes you have to be willing to pull the plug. You need to know when to say when.

Failure is not being unsuccessful. It is not being willing to try.

Great post Oscar! I like the combination of text and video. But as I was reading your post a strange thing happened. I am somewhat older than you, and the description of your reaction and gathering around YouTube to watch the event, made me remember running home from church to watch Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. In a way, the events are eerily similar, But the reactions are very much the same. I imagine the feelings you had watching the space jump were similar to my feelings back in 1969. Funny, how your post evoked memories from so long ago.
