A year ago today

Recently I celebrated my daughter's first birthday. Lots of family and friends came over for lunch and to hang out with the very grown up one year old. She started walking about 2 weeks ago, so just shy of one year old.

So as a follow up to all the celebration, and just the happiness that she's brought into our lives, here's a little video blog I made with her a year ago today.

Parents will understand

It took me about a minute to remove myself from this baby trap. The tricky part was replacing my arms with the pillows with minimal disruption. Much like the mines used during the Vietnam war, baby traps like these can explode with just the slightest motion or activity. It takes practice to be able to escape one of these. They'll still go off, but it gives you enough time to escape and grab a beer or get sone work done before they go off 45 to 75 minutes later. You could call it delayed charges in that case, I guess.

Becoming a dad. An amazing experience.

I didn't get a chance to update you after the last blogpost I made from the hospital. We were waiting for Claire Else to arrive.

Now that she has arrived home and I've had a couple weeks to settle in, I can take a little bit of time to catch up on my blogging. Not only that, but I get to tell you how cool it is to be a dad. People always talk about how amazing it is to become a parent. But it truly is an amazing experience.

I had the chance of cutting the umbilical cord of my baby just a few minutes after she was born I have pictures of that. Shortly thereafter I got to carry Claire and bring her over to Helen while she was still on the operating table. All that was a bit of a blur, but now I can understand what people say about being a dad.

Ever since she's been home, our life has been totally upside down --in a good way. As you might know, I tend to stay up pretty late and don't get much sleep so that hasn't changed much. What has changed is what I do during my waking hours. Claire basically eats, shits & sleeps, more or less in that order. How is this amazing? I don't know... I can't explain it but I never thought I'd be excited to see a dirty diaper or to calm a crying baby at 3:30 AM.

Not until you're a parent will you understand when people say about being a dad. It is awesome. As you might imagine, my blog will now have regular updates about parenting and my experiences. So besides the usual Linux, WordPress, Daily rant and movie stuff, you can now expect to see some of my adventures as a Dad. Oh yeah and I'll be using both my blog and a section on Claire's blog called Parent's Journey to share some of these experiences.
