I just read StumbleUpon Doubles User Base in 16 Months, Surpasses 20 Million Users. I thought I'd share the post and what I thought about it.

First my comments on it:
I love reading news articles like this. I hate reading news articles like this. The story makes me happy and sad at the same time. On one hand, I've been a long time StumbleUpon fan. It has been the way of finding the best stuff on the web.

About two days after I signed up for it back in 2004, it has been a stable in every computer I use. It's gone through its ups and downs, and I'm glad the past 12 - 18 months have been really good for them.

The part that makes me sad is the hordes of new people coming in to use the system that simply won't get it. I think what's going to happen is that the quality of the websites StumbleUpon delivers will go down as more and more spammers join the site to get YOUR attention.

Then there are all the other features that make SU so valuable, our interests and our ratings. Most people I've heard joined over the past 6 months didn't even know there was such a thing. It is unfortunate because that is one of its biggest strenghts. The ability to fine-tune into a single topic that you care about and have rated over time. We'll see how this plays out in the long term.
