Have a slice of Hula Pie
The other Friday, my buddy Robert Cardoza and I stoped for lunch at Jakes Del Mar. Jakes del Mar is one of about a dozen restaurants owned and managed by TS Restaurants. I didn't know this, but Duke's in Huntington Beach is also one of the restaurants in the group, I've been there a few times.
We had a great lunch, we both happen to order the seafood trio; fish, shrimp & scallops and it was absolutely amazing. I would go back there just to have that again (just wish it would have been larger). We had a nice lunch, the restaurant is on the beach practically. But then at the end we ordered this monster desert.
We ordered The Hula Pie. It sounds Hawaiian right? Well it is, apparently it originated in one of the TS restaurants, Kimo. It is a 4 - 5 inch tall pie that is served as shown on the picture. It is made of vanilla ice-cream mixed with macademia nuts. They make it on a chocolate crust (like an oreo crust) and they top it off with chocolate fudge and whipped cream. If you know me, you know I'm not much of a desert guy but this got my attention.
If you ever get the chance to try it, go for it. It's big enough to share with 2 or even three people. We didn't finish it but if you do, you'll find a nice little message written on the plate.
